Note: N4627 Lowndes County Chronicle (Hayneville, AL), 16 October 1851 Died in this town, on Saturday evening last, the 11th inst., Dr. Jere. W. Meriwether, aged 30 years, 8 months, and 26 days. It seldom falls to our lot to record an event so afflictive and melancholy, as that of the death of our late esteemed fellow townsman Dr. Meriwether. He had lingered under a severe pulmonary disease, from which he had suffered extremely during the last three of four years previous to his demise; but had borne up under it with the most commendable resignation and Christian fortitude. Possessed of a strong and vigorous intellect, a heart keenly alive to every noble, generous, and benevolent feeling of our nature, he was an ornament of society, and justly the pride of numerous friends. His upright and moral bearing through life, gave him great weight with his young associates; and many, we doubt not, like the writer of this, will remember, with grateful emotions, the benefit derived from his words of warning and advice in the hour of temptation. Few there are, indeed, who leave this world, with friends so numerous and warmly attached, to mourn their loss. Of him it may be said of a truth — "None named him but to praise, None knew him but to love."
