  Governor David Meriweather Dead
 Ex-Governor David Meriweather died yesterday at his home, a short distance below Louisville, at the great age of over ninety-two. Born in Virginia October 30, 1800, he moved to Kentucky when a boy. He entered political life early; was thirteen times a member of the state legislature, and one its speaker; was a member of the constitutional convention of 1849-50; succeeded Henry Clay in the United States Senate by appointment and was Governor of New Mexico from 1853 to 1857. The last few years of his life were tranquilly spent upon his farm. He was the father of Col. J. B. Meriweather of this city.

  Louisville, Ky., April 4 — The Hon. David Merriwether died this morning at his home in Jefferson county. His career in politics was a remarkable one. He was born October 30, 1800, in Virginia, and came to Kentucky when a boy. He was thirteen times elected a member of the Kentucky Legislature and was once speaker of the house. He was a member of the constitutional convention of 1849-50. In June 1852, he was elected United States senator to succeed Henry Clay and served until December. From 1853-1857 he was territorial governor of New Mexico. He closed his political career in Kentucky in 1885, when he was defeated for the legislature. He leaves a large family.

  Ex-Governor Meriwether
 Louisville, Ky., April 4 — Special telegram—Ex-Governor David Meriwether died this morning at his residence seven miles below Louisville, in his 93rd year. He was born Oct. 30, 1800. Though a fairly successful politician and man of affairs, Mr. Meriwether was noted chiefly as being the successor of Henry Clay in the Senate. When that great commoner died the Governor of Kentucky appointed Mr. Meriwether to succeed him and he sat in the Senate for July 15, 1852, to Dec. 20 of that year. He was Territorial Governor of New Mexico form 1853 to 1857. He entered politics at an early age and served thirteen terms in the Kentucky Legislature, beginning in 1828 and ending in 1883. He ran a fourteenth time in 1885, but was defeated, and then retired from politics. In 1849 he was a member of the State constitutional convention. Governor Meriwether was born in Louisa County, Va., but come here in his boyhood and settled on a farm below Louisville, where he ever after lived.

  David Meriweather
 Ex-Governor David Meriwether, who died recently at his home in Jefferson County, Kentucky, was the grandfather of George E. Graves, the well-known wholesale liquor merchant of this city. Mr. Meriwether was 92 years of age and one of the most highly esteemed citizens of Kentucky. In 1852 he was chosen to fill the vacancy in Congress caused by the death of Henry Clay.
