Note: N4965 John Meriwether James P. and Mary (Eversole) Meriwether, both deceased, are the parents of the subject of this sketch who was born Nov. 23, 1844, in Floyd county, Ind. His wife, whom he married in Georgetown township, Nov. 15, 1866, is Indiana A. Wolf, daughter of David and Mary (Utz) Wolf, both deceased, and who was born in this township Nov. 13, 1844. This union has been blessed with five children: David E., Charles A. dec., Henry J. dec., Blanch N. and Bessie C. Comrade Meriwether was engaged in farming when he responded to his country's call for help enlisting from La Fayette, Ind., Feb. 27, 1865, at the age of 20 years. He was enrolled as a private in Co. H, 150th Ind. V. I. Owing to the lateness of his enlistment and the close of the hostilities soon thereafter, he did not take part in any battles but did guard and garrison duty in Shenandoah Valley. He was granted an honorable discharge August, 1865, at Indianapolis, Ind. His brother, George W. served in 119th Ill. V. I. His wife had two brothers in the service, George and David [Wolf], both members of Co. C, 81st Ind. V. I. Comrade Meriwether is a member of Georgetown Post, 582, and his post office address is Galena, Indiana, near which place his is successfully engaged in farming.

Note: N4966 New Albany Daily Ledger (New Albany, Indiana), 23 February 1916 p. 4 c.3 John Merriwether, a veteran of the Civil war, died Saturday afternoon at his home in Georgetown. He had been in poor health for the past three years and suffered a stroke of paralysis several months ago, from the effects of which he never recovered. Mr. Merriwether was 71 years old and was a native of this county [Floyd] where he lived all his life. For many years he was engaged in farming in Georgetown township but retired two years ago, moving to Georgetown. Besides his wife he is survived by a son, David Merriwether, of Georgetown; two daughters, Mrs. Clarence Martin, Georgetown; and Mrs. Frank Kraft, his city. He is also survived by a sister, Mrs. Mary Schwartz, of Logansport, Ind. He was a member of the United Brethren church. Funeral services will be held at the United Brethren church in Georgetown at 10 a.m., Tuesday. Burial in Wolfe's graveyard.
