Note: N19421 The Anniston Star (Anniston, Alabama), 19 March 1964 (Thursday) J. W. Buttram Passes At 58 John W. (Johnny) Buttram widely-known radio executive and former manager of radio station WHMA, died Wednesday afternoon in a Roanoke hospital. Buttram, 58, Was owner and operator of radio station WELR, at Roanoke at the time of his death. The son of the late Rev. W. M. Buttram of Anniston, he was a brother of Pat Buttram, nationally known radio and television personality. Other survivors include two sons, John, a student at Auburn University, and William of Roanoke; a daughter, Miss Onzelle Buttram, a student at Brenau College; and two brothers, the Rev. Gus Buttram who formally served several Methodist churches in this area and Robert Buttram, as well as several sisters. Mr. Buttram had been undergoing medical treatment in Birmingham for several weeks, but had been improving and had returned to Roanoke where he was working this week when he was suddenly stricken. Buttram came to WHMA in 1942 after starting his radio career in Gadsden. He was named manager of WHMA in 1943 and remained there until 1947, after which he established radio station WGAD in Gadsden before going to Roanoke several years ago. Funeral arrangements will be announced.
