Note: N20867 Aiken Standard (Aiken, South Carolina), 26 Feb 1947, Wednesday AIKEN LOSES TWO FINE WOMEN In the death in Columbia last Thursday of Mrs. Walter Duncan and in the passing of Mrs. Robert William McCreary at her home here Saturday night, Aiken has lost two beloved women who meant much in previous years to the civic, social and religious life of the city. Mrs. McCreary was the widow of the late Hobert William McCreary, a prominent merchant of Aiken and one of the oldest members of St. Thaddeus Episcopal church. She was the former Louise Berry Abercrombie, daughter of the late Everett H. Abercrombie and Pauline Lewis Abercrombie of Columbus. Ca. where she was born on November 28, 1864. She moved to Aiken to make her home with her sister, Mrs. E. J. C. Wood and was married in 1885 to Mr. McCreary. In "Wandering in the Wilderness," the memoirs of the late E. J. C. Wood compiled by his son there is much about the girlhood of Mrs. McCreary. Mrs. McCreary was a member of the Edward Croft chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy and of the Daughters of the American Revolution. However, it was to the work of her church that she devoted her first thoughts. She was a never failing member and untiring worker in the church organizations. Mrs,. McCreary was a devoted wife and loving mother. Of her it could well be said that her "children arise up and call her blessed." Mrs. McCreary is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Pauline Shuler and Mrs. Wilbur Driver, one son Ernest A, McCreary, 6 grandchildren and one great granddaughter.
