MERIWETHER, GEORGE WOOD (1789-1864). George Wood Meriwether, a descendent of Nicholas Meriwether who established this family in Williamsburg, Virginia about 1649, was born on his fathers farm near Louisville on October 10, 1789. In his early life he followed the trade of merchandising at Frankfort, Shelbyville and Louisville and later served for years as Treasurer of the Louisville and Shelbyville Turnpike Road Company and as president of the Louisville Marine and Fire Insurance Company. He also served on the Louisville City Council and as City Treasurer and held appointments to government posts under Andrew Jackson and Martin Van Buren. His portrait hangs in The Filson Club Historical Society and he is best remembered today as the early Louisville genealogist of this family. See George Wood Meriwether, Family Record: Meriwether (Louisville, 1889): 23-26; Nelson Heath Meriwether, The Meriwethers and Their Connections (Columbia, Missouri, 1964): 400-01.
