Note: !The reconstituted US census of 1790 for Virginia carries TERRY McHaney with four white souls in Pittsylvania County. Terry served in the Revolu- tionary War. He enlisted in Bedford County, VA 1776, served 3 years as a Private under Captains ROBERT WALTON, GIDEON BOOKER,and WILLIAM SCOTT and under COLONELS JOHN MCINTOSH, SCRIVEN, and WHITE in the Continental Army, Georgia Troops, and was at the battle of Brier Creek. He was in- scribed in the roll of Virginia at the rate of $8.00 per month to commence 20 Nov 1821. Certificate of Pension issued 15 Jan 1822 (#S 38185) and sent to GEORGE TUCKER, Esq. The records show that he had a wife SARAH and daughter FANNY. !Facts about TERRY and immediate family are based on following records: 1. VA census 1790. 2. Will of FRANCIS LUCK, Will Book, Vol II, p 126-7, Pittsylvania Co, VA probated 17 Jul 1781 which mentions wife SARAH LUCK and children: JOHN, NATHANIEL, RICHARD, HUBBARD, JOYCE, RHODA, BETTY, SARAH, ANN DEADMAN, & CATY EVANS LUCK, & granddaughter MARY LUCK. 4. Intimate History of American Revolution in Pittsylvania County Virginia by HURT p 158, McHAYNEY, TERRY served with GRIFFITH DICKINSON in deep south 3 yrs 1st Co, 3d GA Bn under Col WHITE & Lt Col JOHN McINTOSH. Note that Griffith Dickinson is mentioned as the minister in many marriages. !The marriage records of Halifax County show that TERRY married SARAH LUCK 10 Dec, 1781 (Vol I, page 204). A court record shows that TERRY referred to wife as SARAH HUBBARD LUCK !The names of TERRY, CORNELIUS AND ANDREW appear frequently in the Deed Books of Pittsylvania County beginning in 1781 (vol 6, p141). The following indicates that TERRY & CORNELIUS were brothers: ! "Know all men by these presents that I, TERRY McHaney, of Hali- fax County have bargained, sold, & delivered unto CORNELIUS McHaney my hole rite and title of any part of the legacy left me by my father's last will and testament for full value." his ! Terry x McHaney mark !Court Records, Pittsylvania Vol 34, p310, 21 Aug 1838 Satisfactory evidence being produced in court now sitting it is ordered and certified that TERRY McHaney, a revolutionary pensioner of the US, died on 2d day of July 1838, that he left no widow, that FANNY McHaney, CATHERINE WEST, wife of JOSEPH WEST, ANDREW McHaney, WILLIAM McHaney, who has not been heard of for several years and is generally supposed to be dead and who left two children to wit; JAMES & SALLY living in this county, and RICHARD McHaney, who has been dead many years since leaving three children living in the western country whose particular place of residence is unknown, are the heirs of the late TERRY McHaney. !Following is based on information from MARY INGLIS SIMS: Possibly s/o DENNIS McHaney & FRANCES WATKINS. Halifax Marriage Returns : 10 Dec 1781 (not 1782 as some show) Retns in chronological order & next entry Jan 1782. !Terry believed to be brother to ANDREW, CORNELIUS, and possibly JOHN. CORNELIUS lived in Pittsylvania County, was wealthy, had several children and many slaves. !Terry appears in Pittsylvania Co, VA Deed & Will Book, p 210 "This Indenture 8 Feb 1792 between David Logan of Halifax Co to Terry Mackhaney of Pittsylvania Co...for 50 pounds. land on the head of Allens Creek, 190 acres + or -, signed by David Logan, witnesses THOMAS SELF, OBEDIAH hAM & JOHN OWEN. Terry appears in Ct record(Bk 8, p202) "April Court 1796..ordered that Cornelius Mchany & Terry McHaney pay Sela Georege one dollar and six cents for two days attendance as a witness for them at the suit of Henry Barnes, Admr etc of Wm Jones, dec'd" (This was Celia the dau of Cornelius, who married Hugh George 1794). !1810 census Terry Machaney is listed as 26/45, 1 male child under 1 and 1 female 26/45 living in Campbell Co., VA. A Henry McHaney was also in Campbell Co age 16/26 with female 16/26. A Ryan McHaney appeared in Essex Co VA 26/45 with male 16/26, and two males under 10, 1 female 26/45 & a female under 10. !Terry was one of 3 apparaisers of estate of Robert Whitlock in Pitt- sylvania Co 18 Feb 1818. In 1820 census for Pittsylvania there were 3 Mchaneys: JOHN, TERRY AND CORNELIUS. Terry was shown as over 45, wife (Sarah) 26/45 and female (dau Fanny) 16/25. He is shown owning 7 slaves.
