Note:   (Research):«b»Henry Lee Mangum, son of Arthur and Penelope Butler Mangum, was one of the two first Mangums to come from South Carolina to MS ca 1819. Arthur and his brother Joseph Edwards migrated to Mississippi, perhaps first to Pike or Marion County, beforer settling in Simpson. Family tradition is that Arthur and his brother in law Philip Magee, who had also married a Butler, dau of John Butler, migrated together with the two families in wagons from SC. Henry m in 1834.
  In 1860 Census of Simpson Co, MS, Henry Lewis Mangum and family were living in the Old Hickory Community of Simpson Co, MS, entry 579, p. 86. Entry indicates that Henry L., age 44, was born in SC. Nancy, age 43, b in MS.
  Mr. A.B. Thompson of Bastrop, LA, feels that Henry's middle name is Lee. She notes that his daughter, Mary Ann, is buried beside him and Nancy May Mangum, along with her Floyd husband and two of her brothers. At the time of the 1870 Census, Henry L. Mangum and family were in Smith Co, MS.

  H.L. Mangum enlisted in Co H, 6th MS Regt in Aug 1861. Other Mangums enlisting in the same unit included A.W. Mangum and Samuel E. Mangum. Other familiar names enlisting were G.B. May, Robert Mangum, Joseph May, John C.Mangum, James Mangum, W.G. May.
  Henry L. Mangum and James J. Mangum each patented 92 acres of land in Smith Co, Ms on 31 Aug 1836 in Section 1, 1 N 6 E, in the eastern half of the SE quarter of SW Quarter of SE Quarter, Sect 12.«/b»
