Note: N1041 !Soladad and son came to Colorado with Nathan Russell according to family history from Cy Maez, Saguache Colorado. !Another family story says that John Russell is somehow related. He got someone pregnant and ran off to the hills. Story from information from Sylvia Gallegos, Salida, CO. !None of these family stories has a shred of evidence. Nathan Russell was not in NM until years after Tenacio was born. When Tenacio married he listed Juan Ysidro Maes as his father. His mother was remarried to her second husband Ricardo Madril when she moved from NM to Saguache Colorado. !Beverly Obera has a picture which has written on the back that it is Tenacio Russell and that he died in 1925 at 75 years of age. The story she has been told by Sylvia Gallegos is that Lucy Martinez's son was fathered by Nathan Russel. She married Juan Maez and so began the family name Maez. Her father remembered a Robert Russel that he went to school with. Information from a letter from Beverly in 1992. !I know he was definitely a Russell, but there are two stories that we aren't sure which one is real. One is that his mother was married to a Russell and that they were coming across the plains in a wagon train and they were attacked by indians. And the Russell was killed and that his wife married the Maes who was on the train and didn't know she was pregnant. When the Russells that settled Saquache found out that he was a Russell they went for him or he went looking for them when he was 19. And he came to Saguache then. And stayed around the Russells the rest of his life. He lived on their land. The other one is that Nathan was his father.
