Note: N1130 !1914: Recollections of Pyramid School (T33): My Sister, Bertha Dubeau and I both started the first grade at the same time. Bertha was almost nine but had not been able to attend school until we moved to Pyramid in Rio Blanco County. There was no school on Willow Creek and, of course, that was the reason we moved to Pyramid in 1914. There were 19 students in the school in 1914. The ones I remember as a first grader were Wilda and Lillian Scott, daughters of Frank Scott; Augusta, Ivy and Emma Ball, daughter of Bill Ball; Mary, Bill and Albert(Ab) Egry, children of Charle s Egry; Clifford and Eugene Chinn, children of Ralph Chinn; Billy and Ruth Curtis, children of A. A. Curtis. Also Norman and Dorothy Smith; Lavern, Mary, Roy and Glyn Hahn, children of Lou Hahn; Gladys Renfro, daughter of Red Renfro, Clarence Wiles, son of Bill Wiles and Bertha and myself. Later Billy Mills, son of Jack Mills started school there. I do not remember many teachers. A Mr. Gregory, who was tubercular, and ate one dozen raw eggs for lunch; a Kitty Bennett, a lovely girl who taught music and dancing, and a Mr. Jack Ellis. Our last teacher Edwina Cary, wife of Bud Cary, was there for several years. The school closed for lack of pupils, as ranchers sold their places to big sheep outfits, and stood vacant from the late 1930's with all books, desks and supplies left there. A group of hunters looking for a place out of the weather moved into the school building. They built a fire in the heating stove before checking the stove pipe. The building caught fire and burned to the ground. Nothing was saved from the building. from: History of Hayden & West Routt County, 1876-1989. !According to Cora Mauck, Gene was a nice brother. He worked in the Copper Mine in Butte Montana and met his wife Pauline. Worked all over Colorado mining. Was in Fairplay, Central City and Alma Colorado. Next worked on a ranch in Montana near Willow Creek for Harry Brink his brother-in-law. Harry married Pauline's sister Helen. Government convicted Harry of income tax evasion and he lost the ranch. Harry had slot machines in Montana and Gene took care of them. Government closed down these machines too. Had a pet deer named peanuts. !In about 1983 he was prospecting in Idaho and did not return home. His body wasn't found for several years. A hunter found his skeleton sitting under a bush. !SSN 523-01-4152: Last Residence 59760 Willow Creek, Gallatin, MT, dates of birth and death
