!18 May 1900: Killed by a Train. Idaho Springs, Colorado, May 18. The morning train which reaches Denver at 9:30 struck H. J. Chinn above Dumont this morning, injuring him so he died two hours later. He was about 70 years of age, and had commenced working at the Senator mine this morning. It is believed he was on an errand when he crossed the railroad track, and being deaf, did not hear the approaching train. He was taken to the home of his daughter, Cora Chinn, who runs the Dumont hotel, and while surgical aid was summoned, it was unavailable. He was a relative of R. P. Chinn of Dumont. Denver Post, 18 May 1900.
!18 May 1900: Fatal Accident. Hezekiah Chinn, aged 71 years, a brother of R. W. Chinn of Dumont was struck by the engine of the down train May 18th, and received injuries from which he died within 1 hour and 30 minutes after the accident. It seems that Mr. Chinn had charge of a gang of men working on the new mill now in course of erection just this side of Dumont. He was standing on the lower side of a clump of bushes along side of the railroad track that hid him from the view of the engineer and train men and also hid the train from him, and being quite hard of hearing, he stepped out on the track just in time to be caught by the pilot of the engine, which threw him about 15 or 20 feet, crushing his hips and injuring his head in a frightful manner. He was picked up unconscious and placed on the train, which had stopped, and was taken back to town, where he regained consciousness just as he was being lifted from the baggage car. He lingered in great pain until about 9 o'clock, when he passed away. Mr. Chinn has lived in Dumont for the last two years, coming from Kansas where several of his children still reside. Two of his daughters reside in Dumont. The funeral will be postponed until the children residing in Kansas can be heard from. He will be buried by the Masonic order of which he was an honored member.
