  THE COLONY OF NEW HAVEN
In 1636 the Reverend John Davenport, one of the most distinguished of the Puritan preachers, came to America with a number of his parishoners. They landed at Boston. Davenport was not satisfied to take a subordinate position in the Bay Colony, so in 1628 he and his followers moved a safe distance away and founded a new settlement at Quinnipiack, later known as New Haven, Connecticut. While Hooker, the founder of Hartford, was more liberal than Winthrop and Cotton at Boston, Davenport was more conservative and narrow in his views. New Haven was established as a rigid theocracy, with Theophilius Eaton as governor, but with Davenport as the real ruler. The council was composed of seven officers known as "the pillars of the church," who served also as magistrates. Trial by jury was dispensed with, as no authority for it could be found in the laws of Moses. The strict sumptuary laws of New Haven formed the real basis for the semimythical legend of the Connecticut "Blue Laws."
  William Tuttle of New Haven
 1. WILLIAM TUTTLE came to America in the "PLANTER" in 1635. In the passenger list of this ship he is called a husbandman, indicating that he was a landed proprietor rather than a tenant farmer. He is refered to frequently as "Mr. William Tuttle, from which we may infer a relatively high social status." He landed at Boston and lived there until 1639, when he moved to Quinnipiack, where he arrived in time to participate in the assignment of house lots, thus becoming one of the original proprietors of New Haven. In 1656 William Tuttle purchased the original allotment of Joshua Atwater. This became the Tuttle homestead, which in 1717 was sold to the trustees of the collegiate school, who erected on the lot the first building of Yale College. The lot was for 30 years the only land belonging to the college, and it is still a part of the college campus. William Tuttle was one of the New Haven men who attempted to establish a colony on the Delaware River in 1651. The colonists called at New Amsterdam on the way and were detained there and later sent back to New Haven. The failure of this venture involved William Tuttle in heavy financial loss. In subsequent years up to the date of his death (1674) his name appears frequently in the New Haven records, as town officer, juryman and in other capacities. ELIZABETH TUTTLE, daughter of William, married RICHARD EDWARDS. Their descendants include Reverend Jonathan Edwards, theologian and President of Princeton University, Aaron Burr, Vice President of the United States, President Timothy Dwight of Yale, Mrs. Theodore Roosevelt, Dr. George E. Vincent and many other men and women of distinction.
