Left an orphan at the age of 14, to his own guidance, he chose the edge tool business, which he followed several years, but at last, under many trials and discouragements, prepared himself for the ministry (Baptist), in which he labored for many years in the destitute regions of Wisconsin. He was strongly anti-slavery, and gave of his time and means freely to that cause. Some years before his death, his house, books and other property were consumed by fire, and at about the same time he became totally blind. He died at Ontario, Wisconsin, April 9, 1873; married Aug. 28, 1831, Eliza Ann, dau. of Rev. Dr. BRONSON, Principal of the Episcopal Academy at Cheshire, Conn. She is now (1875) living at Hillsboro, Wis., children born in Berkshire, Tioga Co., N.Y.; 1. Samuel Tillotson, Sept. 27, 1832, d. at LaGrange, O., Jan. 24, 1850; 2. Dau., b. March 11, 1834, m. at Rutland, Wis., Sept. 7, 1860 Edwin G. THOMPSON."
