 4. Alfred B. b. 5 Feb 1844, enlisted 25 Aug 1862 in 142nd Regt. NY Vols., raised in St. Lawrence Co. under Col. R. Judson, who was succeeded by Col. (afterwards Maj. Gen.) N. M. Curtis. The Regt. was variously employed about a year with occasional skirmishing; then ordered to South Carolina, near Fort Sumpter; occupied Folly Island and other places in operation against the Fort. After several months the regt. was ordered back to VA and early in June 1864 joined Grant's army at Cold Harbor, VA. Here he was regimental or adjutant clerk and was employed to carry dispatches from Island to Island and from place to place. Often fired upon, bullets striking the boat his men were rowing. On 11 Jun 1864 while on duty at the ritle trenches at Cold Harbor, VA, he was shot through the neck and died instantly. His regt. belong to the 18th army corps. Letters of condolence were sent to the stricken parents by Capt. Wheeler, Chaplain Palmer, Col. Curtis and Gen. Ames, representing respectively, his company, regiment and army corps.
