(9 Apr 1871) of congestion of the lungs, Hiram Ayers in the 67th yr. of his age. The above announcement will be read with sorrow by all who have ever known the worth and character of the deceased. In many respects he was an extraordinary man. His memory especially was better than that of any other man in the county with whom we have ever been acquainted. As a surveyor his services throughout the northern part of the county, where titles were disputed or lines were with difficulty traced, were invaluable. As a witness in contested cases, as an advisor in heighborhood misunderstandings, his opinions were frequently sought and depended upon. Mr. Ayers was for several years supervisor of the town of Fairfield, and his naame had frequently been mentioned in connection with higher positions. He was a valued friend, a respected citizen, a loved husband and father. Few man in the county would have been more generally missed, or more sincerely mourned." -- Little Falls Journal, April 1871.
