"SILAS TUTTLE, b. June 26, 1812. Appointed by Gov. of Conn., Lieut. of 8th Co. 12th Regt. Conn. Mil. and served as Capt. until the militia system was abandoned. Justice of the Peace and has held various offices in his native town of Middlebury; resides on the old homestead, occupied by his ancestors for nearly two centuries. It is situated on the eastern border of Lake Weraumaug, a small but beautiful sheet of water, which deserves to be better known to the lovers of the picturesque. An engraved view of it may be seen in Cothren's Woodbury, 2d vol., p. 1063. Capt. Tuttle has taken much interest in this work, and we are indebted to him for copies of records and other encouragement and aid; m. Sept. 1, 1833, SUSAN ALLEN, b. April 7, 1813.
 I. HENRY A., b. April 28, 1834; being left with a neighbor was run over by an ox cart and killed, Sept. 15, 1836; buried same day and time with his grandfather, AARON TUTTLE; the largest funeral ever known in Middlebury.
 II. JULIA S., b. April 2, 1837; m. Feb. 20, 1880, ALGERNON C. BEACH; res. Hamden, Conn.
III. EMILY AUGUSTA, b. July 15, 1841; for many yrs an invalid and confined to a bed of suffering; a case similar in some respects to that of Chloe Lankton [1]. Miss Tuttle composed the hymn sung at the Tuttle Family gathering in Sept. 1873, and has written many pieces which have appeared from time to time in various papers. The following are the first two and last two of a poem of eight verses, published in the Advocate and Guardian, in which she gives expression, no doubt, to her own trials and her consolation. It is headed, "Lead Me to the Rock that is Higher than I.":
Life's tempest if raging, the winds loudly roar, My frail barque is drifting far, far from the shore; My heart is o'erwhelmed, Lord, hear my sad cry, "Lead me to the Rock that is higher than I." Distressed and perplexed, my spirit is faint, To whom but to thee can I bring my complaint? Dear Lord! thou art near me, and still will I cry, "Lead me to the Rock that is higher than I." Ere long thou wilt lift life's black cloud from my sight, And lead from this darkness thy child into light, And then shall I trace from my home in the sky, This path to the "Rock that is higher than I." Not one pain too many, not one sorrow nor tear, Nor one pang at parting with hopes cherished here, All, all these were needful my patience to try, They led to "the Rock that was higher than I." IV. MARY ELLEN, b. June 10, 1851."
