Early in life he found employment as a teamster; he moved from Pennsylvainia to Ohio, and settled in the near vicinity of Sandusky, where he assisted in the erection of the first wharf in Sandusky city. He was married while residing near Sandusky, to Miss Anna Crane, a daughter of Benjamin Crane, who afterward moved to Washtenaw and lived near Saline. It is authoritatively stated that Mr. TUTTLE and Benjamin WOODRUFF were among the first settlers of this county. During the autumn of 1824 he bought land, now in possession of heirs to the estate. It was purchased from the goverment, the deed bearing the signature of President Monroe. Erecting a log house, he began the founding of a western home. The Indian tribes then were numerous in southern Michigan, were quite freindly and mingled freely with the whites. On one occasion a squaw traded an old flint musket for a peck of corn, which Mr. T. was sole proprietor. He died after a long and useful life. In 1862, and seven years later occurred the death of his heroic companion, who had shared with him the hardships of pioneer times. Five children survive them - Burton (Ebenezer) who married Caroline STOKES; Chris, who is a resident of this county; also Hiram, a merchant, and John from which this sketch is obtained, who married Maria CANNON, a daughter of Josish Cannon, of New York State. Three children were born to the subject of this sketch-(John's children) Emma, Carrie, Hiram. Mr. Tuttle is a farmer of means, owning 80 acres of land where he now resides, and is one of the heirs to his father's estate, consisting of 248 acres. Anna Tuttle, sister of, above was united in marriage to William Ort." ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ LAND: Land Record: Name: HIRAM TUTTLE Date: 20 Jul 1825 Location: OH, Document #: 797 Serial #: OH0530__.286 Sale Type: CASH ENTRY SALEAcres: 80.0000 Meridian or Watershed: OHIO RIVER SURVEY Parcel: Township 22 N, Range 19 W, Section 17 Name: HIRAM TUTTLE Date: 07 Apr 1829 Location: OH, Document #: 1459 Serial #: OH0540__.469 Sale Type: CASH ENTRY SALE Acres: 80.0000Meridian or Watershed: OHIO RIVER SURVEY Parcel: Township 22 N, Range 19 W, Section 17 Name: HIRAM TUTTLE Date: 04 Apr 1833 Location: MI, Document #: 4791 Serial #: MI0100__.324 Sale Type: 272002 Acres: 79.1200 Meridian or Watershed: 19 Parcel: Township 3 S, Range 7 E, Section 22 Name: HIRAM TUTTLE Date: 22 Apr 1824 Location: MI, Document #: 505 Serial #: MI0020__.065 Sale Type: 272002 Acres: 72.1000 Meridian or Watershed: 19 Parcel: Township 3 S, Range 7 E, Section 23 ~~~~~~~~~~~ 1850 United States Federal Census Name: Hiram Tuttle Age: 53 Birth Year: abt 1797 Birthplace: Pennsylvania Home in 1850: Ypsilanti, Washtenaw, Michigan Gender: Male Family Number: 504 Household Members: Name Age Hiram Tuttle 53, m, farmer, b-PA Anna Tuttle 48, f, b-Canada Marcus Tuttle 25, m, farmer, b-MI Hiram Ire Tuttle 19, m, farmer, b-MI John M Tuttle 16, m, farmer, b-MI Anna M Tuttle 7, f, b-MI
