WILLIAM, b. Aug 21, 1820; d. May 9, 1877; at a meeting of the N. Hav. Board of Councilmen the following resolutions was unanimously adopted: "That in the death of Hon. WILLIAM FITCH, the late Mayor of this city and Paymaster-General of the state of Conn. during the late war, New Haven has lost one of its foremost citizens, and one whose place in the community it seems impossible to fill. Conspicuous for his public spirit; prompt and untiring in the discharge of every duty; freely spending his strength in the support and conduct of our local charities, in whose behalf he cheerfully assumed many a burden from which others shrank; always to be found at his post in whatever position he was called to fill; holding office with reluctance, but administering it to universal acceptance and with a single view to the public good, he was a man without reproach and without an enemy. Resolved, that in token of our respect for his memory the Court of Common Council will attend his funeral in a body." Similar resolutions were adopted by the Board of Road Commissioners; by the New Hav. Savings Bank, of which he was President; by the second National Bank, of which he was a Director; by the employees of W. & E. T. Fitch, among others; "That we have lost a true friend, one ever interested in our welfare and to whose benevolence, purity and nobleness of character we would add our testimony;" by the New Haven Orphan Asylum, of which he was Secretary and Treasurer and member of the Advisory Board and by the General Hospital Society of Conn., of which he was Vice-President, and of which "he was the main pillar," and to whom, "more than to any other single person, is due the extension of the buildings and conveniences of the hospital, which have of late so greatly widened its field of usefulness. Ready and wise in counsel; prompt and efficient in action; giving of his time and his means with unsparing generosity, few charities have ever known so faithful and self-sacrificing a friend. He rendered important services to the city and state; but in this hour, the fittest eulogium seems to be the simple words with which such as he are welcomed to heaven, 'I was sick and ye visited me; naked, and ye clothed me.'"--William Fitch Memorial; which also contains funeral services, May 14, 1877, with address by Rev. Dr. GEO. L. WALKER, and a memorial discourse preached in the First chh. in New Hav., Sunday morning, May 20, 1877, by Dr. F. A. FRISBIE. 4.
