June 9, 1843; enlisted Aug. 14, 1862, served 3 yrs. and two mos. being he was offered a clerkship which is a much easier position than that of private soldier in the ranks; but he declined the clerkship for the reason that he enlisted to carry a musket, and he continued as he began to the end of his term of service.
