"Samuel Tuttle, b. Monkton, VT, Aug. 14, 1797; grad. Middlebury College, VT, 1818; Col. Phys. and Surg., N.Y.C., 1825; prac. in Utica, N.Y. large and successful; persuaded to remove to Richester, N.Y., and was there converted under the preaching of Chas. G. Tenney. In 1841 removed to Albion, Michigan and had an extensive practice there. In 1852 went overland to Cal., and returned next year by water. In 1854 went overland with stock, in company with 25 others, and had charge of the company; returned in 1856 bringing his two sons with him; both trips were very successful. In 1857 he built a brick store on Superior St. in Albion.
In 1863 went to Harper's Ferry in VA and rescued his son, Samuel H., from the jaw of death and brought him home. His numerous journeyings and removals would seem to imply a restless spirit, but all seemed necessary for health or wealth. He d. in Albion May 24, 1879, in his 82nd year. His funeral sermon was preached from a text he selected some time before his death: "Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on Thee. Trust in the Lord forever, for in the Lord Jehovah is everlasting strength."--Isaiah, 26:3-4. A life size portrait, taken when at the age of 25, represents him, and truly it is said, as a very handsome man; and he was a remarkably fine looking old gentleman, as shown by photographs taken when at the age of 77. Mrs. Tuttle has had two life-size copies made; m. in Rome, N.Y. Feb. 5, 1827, Frances E., dau. of Dr. Stephen White, b. 1803; d. in Rome, N.Y. Oct. 20, 1838 of consumption. He m. (2) in Panama, N.Y., Nov. 17, 1839, Sarah M., dau. of Wm. White, and g. dau. of Dr. Stephen, a union that was much desired by the mother of his first wf. She was b. in Rome. N.Y., April 12, 1819."
