"Samuel Horace Tuttle, b. Dec. 27, 1846; studied in Albion College; enlisted in 1862 in 17th Michigan Vols.; served as musician; was in several battles and aided in carrying the wounded to the rear; became very sick and was given up to die. In answer to telegraph his father went on and found him near Harper's Ferry very low with typhoid fever, and carried him home where he finally recovered; but the fever prostrated four other members of the family, and was not eradicated for about nine months. In store in Rochester about seven years; went to California 1875. There invested and lost all in stocks. Married there, and his wife dying, he traveled in Oregon, Washington Territory and British Columbia, returning to San Francisco and was about to embark for Australia when a letter from home recalled him to the bedside of his dying father. He now resides in Albion, Mich. His mother has life-size portrait taken when he was 27. In summer of 1882 called to take charge of Avon Springs in N.Y."
