Franklin, CT 30 Dec 1762; Yale College 1786; d. Aug 1844 in Waterbury at the house of his son-in-law William Brown, with whom he had several years resided. At the age of seventeen he was sent to his uncle, Dr. Charles Backus, an eminent minister of Somers, Conn. Next year entered Yale College, but soon left and engaged as a marine on board a privateer; made two cruises and assisted in taking two prizes; during his last cruise he was dangerously sick. He again entered Yale College and graduated 1786. In 1788 entered the Law School of Judge Reeve, and in 1790 admitted to the bar of Litchfield County. He settled next year in Waterbury and was Town Clerk from 1793 to 1818; Justice of the Peace from 1796 to 1830; Rep. in Leg. 17 times, 1796-1813; Judge of Probate, 1801-1834, and Judge of Co. Court, the last year presiding Judge 1801-1820. He was a very popular and worthy man.--Bronson's History of Waterbury."
