Note: Frederick Tuttle, c. 1883, p.320: "Stephen Tuttle, b. Oct. 10, 1798; grad. West Point Mil. Acad., 1820, at head of his class, Andrew Jackson Donalson (for whom Fort Donalson on the Cumberland river was named), nephew and private sec. of Pres. Andrew Jackson, being 21 and Thomas S. Sudler, 3d. He had no intention of competing for the honors, until in the last year he was persuaded to do so by his classmates, who recognized and acknowledged his transcendant ability as a scholar. It is reported, and as much may be inferred from his standing in previous years as shown by the W.P. Register, that it did not cost him any very strenuous exertion. After graduating he was connected with the National Road as Govt. Engineer; also engaged at Plaquemine Bend on Mississipi river, and for a time in Florida, building or repairing a fort. While on this service, he died of climatic disease, Jan. 21, 1835. The following record is from the W.P. Register: "Stephen Tuttle, No. 232, d. in the service; graduated 1820; first class rank, engineers; appointed cadet June 30, promoted brevet 2d Lietu. July 1, 1820; 2d Lieut.
