Notes
a. Note:   OBIT - Jackson Citizen Patriot 30 Jan 1893: Death of Dr. J. B. Tuttle The Oldest Practitioner of Jackson Community Dies at the Age if 84 Years The legion of friends of Dr. James B. Tuttle were somewhat surprised to learn this morning that the doctor had succumbed to disease incident to old age, although the death of the greatly respected man had been expected for a week. He passed peacefully away at his residence, at 416 South Jackson Street, at 11:30 Sunday night.
James B. Tuttle was born at Mentz, Cayuga county, New York, Dec. 5, 1808, and therefore had reached the age of 84 years, 1 month and 24 days. After graduating in his chosen profession he left his native town and came west being one of the first settlers in what is now the city of Chicago, where he remained a few years, aquiring property, which, had he held it, would have made him a millionaire many times over. He finally wearied of living in the town which he imagined would always remain a mud hole, sold his property and returned to Mentz, where on May 18, 1838, he was united in marriage to Sarah R. Dodge. The results of this union were two children, a son, James F. Tuttle, who was sacrificed on his country's altar at the battle of Antietam, and a daughter, Lizzie, the wife of Alonzo Bennett, Esq. The doctor and his little family settled in Michigan in 1857, and the deceased practiced his profession until the weakness of age caused him to relinquish his business. The doctor served two terms as surgeon at the state prison. On April 12, 1872, the wife who had shared in the doctor's successes and comforted him in adversity, died and was buried by the side of her soldier son. In 1875 the doctor married Mrs. Mary E. Page, who survives her husband.
At an early age the doctor united with the Methodist Episcopal church at Mentz, and on coming to Jackson both he and his wife deposited their letters with the First M. E. church here, and remained in full membership until taken from earthly scenes. In his many years connection with the church the doctor filled many offices of honor and trust He was instrumental in the organization of the Haven M E. Church, and bore the proud title of "Father of the Church." In slavery days Dr. Tuttle was a vallant opponent of the pernicious system, and on the organization of the Republican party became a member of it. He was a devoted patriot of during war, as the giving of his only son to his country is irrefutable evidence. Of late years the doctor has entertained leanings toward prohibition, but always voted as his conscience dictated.
John J. Tuttle of Leslie is a brother of the deceased, and he has been apprised by telegraph of the death of his only brother.
The funeral will be held at the First M. E. church Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 conducted by Rev. W. S. Sly, of Lansing, an old-time friend of the doctor. The remains will be interred in the family lot at Mt. Evergreen.
