Notes
a. Note:   Susquehanna Co., PA from Cheshire, CT beginning in 1797. Titus Smith and his friend Rufus Lines came first in 1797 and began clearing landTitus was 18. The next year Ephraim came with Titus by ox-sled with supplies and a few farm tools. They procured and cleared land. Ephraim went back to CT for the winter and brought his family to Franklin in early 1799. Roswell and Raymond came next followed later followed by Sylvester and Lyman who was under the guardianship of Raymond. Brother Anson came at a date that is apparently unrecorded, but in 1805 he was fatally injured by a falling tree limb. He lingered 9 weeks while his brothers desperately sought medical help. Anson's death prompted the creation of the cemetery in which he is buried.
Ephraim was instrumental in the founding of the Franklin Hill Presbyterian Church. The following is from a newspaper article that was written on the occasion of the 100th anniversity of the arrival of the Smith brothers in Franklin Twp: "When the Rev. Oliver Hill was called to be the pastor of their little church, his examination as a candidate for the ministry was held at Mr. Ephraim's [Smith's] house. The ordination took place in his barn, which was dedicated for the occasion. In his barn also in 1818 the revival was held, as the little school house proved too small for their overflowing meetings. Ephraim was a very good man, very energetic and full of business and ambition."
