"Clarissa Tuttle, b. Dec. 31, 1779; m. Titus Smith, b. Sept. 27, 1779, and both d. on the same day, Feb. 16, 1862. In Sept. 1797, Rufus Lines and Titus Smith left Cheshire, Conn., and arrived at Lawsville (Susquehanna County, PA) on the 27th of the same month, the 18th birthday of Smith. The object was to explore and select land, all returning to Conn. for the ensuing winter. In Feb. 1798 Titus Smith was again on the ground accompanied by his brother Ephraim (who m. Sally Tuttle, sister of Clarissa). They brought a sled, provisions and a few utensils. The sled, covered with boughs, served as a shelter for a long time. The lot he had partially cleared the previous fall he sold to David Barnum and commenced anew on the farm he cultivated and lived on till old age. He was one of the elders of the Presbyterian Church, chosen in 1836, and had previously been a deacon, which office he held about fifty years. He was one of the seven brothers who settled in Franklin, all of whom lived beyond the age of 80 years excepting Anson, who was mortally hurt by a falling limb of a tree he was chopping. This was in 1805. He was 22 years of age and unmarried. His death made it necessary to select ground for a cemetery, and his burial was the first one in the township. The ground selected was a part of each of the adjoining farms of Rufus Lines and Ephraim Smith. In that sacred enclosure nearly all the first settlers of the place now rest. Rufus Lines removed finally to Lawsville about 1801---Blackman's History of Susquehanna County."
"Lawsville, PA received its name in honro of Samuel A. Law of Cheshire, CT to whose influence probably was due the settlement there of so many emigrants from his nataive town. The route from Cheshire was across the country to the Hudson River, crossing to Catskill, thence to thead of the Delaware river near Harpersville, NY, thence to the Susquehanna Valley at Wattle's Ferry, at the north end of Unadilla Village; thence down the Susquehannah to Great Bend, the whole distance, about 250 miles, much of it west of the Hudson a wilderness. From Great Bend to Lawsville the way was found by marked trees and the compass; camping on arrival until cabins could be erected. The first clearing at Lawsville was made in the spring of 1797 by James Clark."
"The seven brothers above referred to were sons of Ephraim, and supposed grandsons of Ephraim and Thankful Tyler Smith of Cheshire, Conn. Thankful Tyler was dau. of Nathan and Rachel (Tuttle) Tyler, and gr. dau. of Deacon Timothy Tuttle (early births and baptisms copied from Cheshire church records.)
