At age 13 apprenticed to the printing business in the Stateman office of that town for 3 years. At the age of 17 (1833) he removed to Rutland, VT and went into partnership with a Mr. MAXHAM in the publication of the Rutland Herald; his health failing him, he only remained in the partnership a few months, when he returned to Castleton and worked in the Statesman office, in Castleton, and afterwards bought out the paper. His health again failing him, he sold out and became a post rider. He married July 4, 1837, Susan Stone Cutter, dau. of William and Cynthia (Watson) Cutter, b. at Greenwich, Mass., Dec. 27, 1821. In 1840 he removed to Rutland and became business manager of the Herald, which position he held until 1850, when he withdrew from that concern and started a general job printing office. In 1856 he bought the Rutland Herald (the oldest paper in the state). In 1861 he started the Daily Herald, and continued the publication of the same, together with his sons, Albert H. and Harley C., until 1872, when he retired with a competency from active business. He has always been one of the most influential Republicans in the county and state. Was a delegate to the Phladelphia Convention that nominated General Grant for President. In 1872 the business was divided: Albert H. taking the Herlad, Harley C. Egbert C. and Fred. G. the general job printing, book binding, book and stationery business, under the firm name of Tuttle & Co.; they have been the official state printers for the past three terms of two y ears each, and received the appointment for the fourth term, which expires in Aug., 1884. They have the largest establishment of the kind in the state.
