"Titus Brockett, b. June 28, 1700; died of small pox in Wallingford, CT July 29, 1773. The will of Capt. Titus Brockett dated Aprtil 1768 names wife Mary and her mother Elizabeth Rice, nephew Zuer Brockett, and niece Rachel, wife of Constant Kirtland; devises to St. Paul's Episcopal church of Wallingford a piece of land "I bought of Charles Sperry adj. land of Stephen Hall," slave Esau to be free on condition that the heirs become responsible for his good behavior. He was one of the most active Episcopalians of Wallingford, a member of Rev. Mr. Andrews' church, and a strong loyalist. He was one of the four largest contributors to the erection of the second church edifice in 1762. Mr. Andrews was compelled to leave for Nova Scotia on account of a Fast Day sermon. At the funeral of Mr. Brockett, the Whigs would not allow his body to be buried with the other deceased members of his family, but compelled TURHAND KIRTLAND and two others to have the grave dug in a wet, springy ground, where it immediately filled with water, though in midsummer, and rails were used to keep the coffin down. The rails protruded from the ground and were pointed at by the loyalist as a monument to the fanaticism of their persecutors--Davis' History of Wallingford; m. Feb. 22, 1728, MARY TURHAND, who died May 1, 1777, age 64; only child Rachel, who died age 5 years."
