Oct. 28, 1823, was apprenticed to an uncongenial trade which he did not learn nor follow. In fall of 1844 was rodman in leveling party in surveys and locatin of the N.Y. and New Haven R. R. between Southport and the state line in Connecticut, under Prof. A. C. Twining and afterwards on survey for the Naugatuck Valley R. R. from 1845 to 1849 on surveys and construction of the New Haven and Northampton R. R. from New Haven to Avon, including branch to Collinsville, most of the time as assistant engineer under Henry Farnam, Joseph E. Sheffield being president of the Co. In 1850 as principal assistant engineer, located the Cincinnati, Hamilton & Dayton R. R. from Hamilton to Dayton and until prostrated by the fever of the climate and compelled when convalescing to return to the East to recuperate, had charge of construction as division engineer. Soon afterwards he surveyed a line across the "Great Bend" of the Susquehanna, from Binghamton to Harpersville, for the Albany & Susquehanna R. R. In 1851 he had charge as principal assistant engineer of surveys from Cincinnati, Ohio to St. Louis, Mo., for the O. & M. R. R., comprising a year of laborious field work, camping out a part of the time to avoid greater hardships. The country was new and comparatively unsettled. In 1852 he surveyed and located the Cincinnati & Dayton Short Line R. R., the construction of which was begun, but soon stopped by the opposition of the rival corporation and want of adequate funds. Some twnety years later the line was completed and put in operation. He afterwards surveyed and made approximate locations for the Cincinnati, Lebanon & Zenia R. R.; the "Four Mile Valley" R. R., from Hamilton, Ohio to Richmond, Indiana; the Sciota Valley R. R>, from Columbus, Ohio to Circleville, and of the Atlantic & Ohio R. R., eastward from Columbus toward the Pennsylvania state line. A part of this line was under contract when the R. R. panic, induced by the Schuyler frauds, caused the immediate suspension of new R. R. enterprises, and a long stagnation ensued. In 1855, he removed to New York city, and began the wholesale book subscription business in connection with HENRY HOWE of Cincinnati, Ohio, which proved quite successful notwithstanding the panic of 1857 and the tremendous political agitation preceding the war, until the war itself destroyed as by an earthquake almost every occupation that was not connected in some way with the support or the destruction of human life. In 1868 he joined the "Stowe Association" and was led into some genealogical investigations. The interest thus excited in the maternal lineage and relationships, naturally and speedily extended to paternal aide and finally resulted in this compilation; married in New Haven by Rev.
