 "Joseph Tuttle, b. May 8, 1775; resided Sandgate, Vt.; Selectman; Justice of the peace; Collector of Taxes; Rep. in State Legislature five sessions. In early life kept public house a number of years. His parents belonged to the Presbyterian church, and he was brought up strictly in that faith. He wrote a good deal on birch bark by firelight, evenings, and worked his farm barefoot. Temperate in all things, honest, very kind to the poor, always ready to help the needy, apt at rhyming, self-made, and, perhaps, none the worse for that, an excellent man and universally respected. He died Feb. 15, 1861, age 86 years; married Abigail Hurd, b. 1782; died May 17, 1821 (her mother's maiden name was Johannah Bristol)).
