She is called both "Huldah Tuttle" and "Rosabella Tuttle" in vital records and published genealogies, but her actual birth name was Smith. Her mother, Rosabella Denslow m. 1st Unknown Smith and 2d Amos Tuttle, who adopted the daughter of her first marriage. Hence the use of "Tuttle" as Huldah Rosabella Upham's maiden name.

The Pawlet history says only that Huldah was the "daughter of Rosabella Tuttle." It does not give her maiden name. The Tuttle-Tuttle genealogy clarifies the situation. It says that Huldah R. Tuttle, who married Joseph P. Upham was adopted by Amos Tuttle and that she was the daughter of his second wife (i.e., Rosabella) and her first husband Smith. No sources given.
