Erastus Darwin Tuttle, b. Sandgate, VT, Dec. 16, 1791; when quite young ran away from home, leaving his plough in the field. Studied medicine in Troy, NY; went from Troy to Auburn, NY in 1811, which then contained about 300 inhabitants. He was the first physician employed in the state prison, and for fifteen years was first physician and surgeon. He was the family physician of the leading people of Auburn, among whom were Gov. Wm. H. Seward, Gov. Enos T. Throop, etc.; married Dec. 30, 1812, Harriet, daughter of William and Hannah Bostwick, b. in Auburn Sept. 30, 1795; died May 3, 1870; her father's family was the second that settled in Auburn. He died in Auburn June 22, 1829 in the 39th year of his age, and by his decease the country lost one of its most promising physicians. This epitaph inscribed on his monument in Fort Hill Cemetery, Auburn, NY, "is no idle tale." "This tablet was erected by the hands of filial affection, not so much to commend the brilliant talents and high attainments, for which he was pre-eminent in his profession, as to record the testimony of his lasting virtues and unremitting labors in the cause of ameliorating the sufferings of his fellow men."
