Dec. 31, 1798, (M.D.); studied medicine, supporting himself meanwhile by farming and teaching school; studied with Prof. Theodore Woodward of Castleton; graduated Medical School, 1825, practiced at Danby and Williamstown, Vt.; traveled in the West summer and fall of 1826 and returned with chills and fever; located at Manchester, Vt. In 1835 was commissioned as 1st Surgeon of 1st Brig., 12nd Div. Vt. Mil.; a successful surgeon and physician; often called to distant towns as counsel or to perform surgery; he suffered much exposure and hardship crossing the mountains to the east and west of Manchester, often in snow and rain, sometimes obliged to leave his sleigh and foot it through deep snow to visit the sick; he was mild and easy in disposition and as ready to respond to the calls of the poor and lowly as of the eminent or rich; he died by stroke of paralysis, July 23, 1866; he married Mary Bulkley, daughter of Gen. Martin Roberts of Manchester, Vt.; b. Aug. 2, 1802; d. June 6, 1841; he m. (2) June 12, 1844, Jerusha, widow of Frederick Tobey and daughter of Lyster Taylor of Lee, Mass.; b.
