Feb. 2, 1752; after married, removed to Richmond, Berkshire Co., Mass., where, during Shay's rebellion he was Deputy Sheriff and at times exposed to much danger; on one occasion, while driving, he was fired at and pursued by the insurgents, and escaped by putting his horse to full speed and lying down in the bottom of his sleigh; in defiance of threats of instant death, he forcibly opened and adjourned the Court at Lenox. He removed 1808 to Nassau, Rensselaer Co., NY, and in 1815 removed a few rods into Schodack, NY where he died Jan. 9, 1816; he was a man of great courage and resolution, exceedingly active temperament, fine personal appearance and an ardent Whig; he dealt largely in real estate; kept a store and hotel, frequently bought droves of cattle and drove them to New York for sale, returning on horseback with the proceeds; the farm where he died was afterwards owned by Dr. McCLELLAN and his wife, and now (1875) by Mrs. BINGHAM, their dau.; children born in Richmond, Mass.: 1. samuel Cook, b.
