". . .Samuel McClellan, M.D., b. June 14, 1787, m. at Nassau, NY June 1, 1816, Laura Hannah Cook, b. Jan. 4, 1787. "This connection proved a very happy one for themselves, for their children, for their friends; home under their roof was a home for all with a hearty welcome for each, and no one who has enjoyed it can ever forget the amenities which uniformly clustered there." The following is a brief abstract from "EULOGY ON SAMUEL McCLELLAN, M.D., prepared by order of the Medical Society of the State of N. Y. and read at the annual meeting in Albany, Feb. 3, 1857, by Thomas W. Blatchford, M.D." printed by C. Van Benthuysen, Albany. We regret that our limited space will not admit the entire paper. In early life Dr. McClellan attended the common schools and the Academy at Deerfield; taught school and worked on his father's farm; then studied medicine with an elder brother, Dr. John McClellan of Livingston, N.Y., and was licensed to practice by the Columbia Co. Med. Soc. About 1813 he settled at Schodack, N.Y., and very soon after a malignant fever (typhoid pneumonia) prevailed extensively in that part of the county as an epidemic. His success in treating this disease was extraordinary, and established his reputation as a skillful physician, which he ever afterwards maintained.
He was remarkably popular as a medical instructor and his office was usually full of students, several of whom have risen to eminence and not one has failed to become a successful practitioner. He was a skillful surgeon, but after reaching the age of fifty years declined all surgical operations. He was twice elected Pres. of the Renssellaer Co. Med. Soc. Soon after his marriage he united with the Presbyterian church at Nassau and served long as a ruling elder until the "new school" division compelled him to leave, about 1842, when he obtained letters and united with the Dutch Reformed church of the same place. He was soon elected a ruling elder and held the office until his death. He was a warm advocate of the temperance cause. He was a noble looking man, much above the ordinary height, and when in health his weight varied from 225 to 240 lbs. He died of an internal cancer, April 8, 1855."
