Was hanged by members of the Sons of Liberty in the early days of the Revolutionary War, but one man returned and cut him down before he died. Signed a loyalty oath before the Connecticut General Assembly in 1777. Came to Washington County from Connecticut in 1791. Was elected an overseer of the poor in 1808 upon the establishment of Fearing Township. Son, also named Joel, became a Washington County commissioner in 1829. Buried in a family cemetery off Kohl Road in Whipple, about 2.4 miles from Ohio 821. It does not record the date of his death, but notes his son Simeon died in 1817 and his son's wife Phoebe died in 1852. According to Ernest H. Hill, Jr., "he was only in his 20's and influenced and mislead by his father and especially Reverend Nichols, an Anglican minister." His children were baptised Congregational.. After his first wife died, he and his eldest son, Linus, moved to Maretta, Ohio in 1789. The second son, Simon, joined them in 1791.
