Note: p.232, North America, Family Histories, 1500-2000 "Samuel Posts married first, 1 Mar 1759, Susanna GRANT of Norwich, who died 5 Nov 1762 in the 28th year of her age (gravestone, Town Burying Ground). Susanna WATERMAN was over thirteen years older than Samuel Post, but no other Susanna WATERMAN available for the marriage appears on Norwich records. After her death, he had a third wife, Dorcas.
On 8 Mar 1799, administration of the estate of Samuel POST of Norwich was granted to Simeon THOMAS, with Thomas L. THOMAS as surety. Distribution was made to the heirs 12 Aug 1801; to Susan, one of the daughters; to Sally, the other daughter; and to Samuel DAVIS and Susanna DAVIS, children of Hannah (POST), one of the daughters. Dower was set to the widow, Dorcas POST 17 Aug 1804. [Norwich Probate Records, File No. 8829.]
By his first wife, Samuel POST had children (not in the WATERMAN line):
1. Samuel b. 16 May 1760; d. 29 Sept 1794 ae 34 (gravestone, Grove St. Cemetery, New Haven); m. at Trinity Church, New Haven, 21 Aug 1784, Mary DAVIS, b. abt. 1763, d. 29 Jan 1836 ae 73 (gravestone). She m. (2) Thomas CANBY of Philadelphia, Pa., and New York City. Samuel's only chld, Samuel, bapt. Aug. 1785, buried 28 Apr 1786 ae 9 mos. Samuel had also an acknowledged natural child, Lucy.
2. Hannah, b. 25 Oct 1762; d. abt. 1789-94; m. John DAVIS, b. abt. 1761, d. 14 June 1809 ae 48 (gravestone, New Haven), brother of her brother's wife, and son of Thomas and Lois (TUTTLE) DAVIS. He m. Mary FITCH of Lebanon, Conn., by whom he had eight children. The surviving children of Hannah were: (1) Susan G., b. abt. 1787, d. at New Haven, 16 Jan 1847 ae 60 (gravestone); m. 1 Mar 1807 Frederick MILLS. (2) Samuel Post, bapt. 10 May 1789; d. in 1850; m. Emma CHAPMAN of Hartford.
Samuel POST apparently had no children by Susanna WATERMAN; the following were almost certainly by his third wife:
3. Susan 4. Sally. The Connecticut Courant, issue of 13 June 1820, announced the marriage at Litchfield, Conn., by Rev. Dr. BEECHER, of Elisha P. CORNING of Hartford to Sally T., daughter of the late Samuel POST of Norwich.
