He prepared for college at Drury Academy, North Adams, Massachusetts and graduated from Williams College, MA with the class of 1850. After becoming a civil engineer, he went west and worked on the new railways then being built there. As new country was opened up and in 1855, he moved on until he settled in Saint Charles, Minnesota. He worked there in the real estate and insurance business. In 1859 he served one term in the Minnesota legislature. In the same year he was married to Miss Sarah Amanda Wadleigh of Plainview, Minnesota. They were the parents of three sons, Alford W. "Fred", Darwin D. Olds, and Jay Y. Olds. Mrs. Olds died in 1894 and in that same year, Alfred traveled out to the Wenatchee, Washington area. A year later he purchased property there and in 1903, he and his sons moved to what is now the Sunnyslope area near Wenatchee. When Mr. Olds celebrated his 90th birthday, he was said to the "the oldest man in the Wenatchee Valley". He died in his 90th year on 3 November 1915.
