Remus Marcus Fowler and his twin brother Romulus Julius (who died in 1807 while a student at Yale College) were the 10th and 11th of Noah and Rhoda (Tuttle) Fowler's twelve children. Noah was a Torrington farmer who was well versed in the classics, hence the unique names of his children.
Remus studied medicine and practiced at New Marlborough, Mass where he had two daughters with his first wife Harriet (Childs). Harriet died in 1824 and was buried at Palmer Cemetery in New Marlborough. Dr Fowler returned to Litchfield Co, Conn and in 1827 purchased his family home with seven acres of land in the village of Washington for $1250. That year he married Mary Miller, daughter of a former Hessian soldier who had stayed in America after the war. Mary gave birth to a son and a daughter.
Dr Fowler was a kind and generous man remembered for his humor and original prescriptions; in one case he prescribed exercise in a swing for an entire family, and in another he treated imsomnia by singing at the patient's bedside for an hour until she fell asleep.
Portraits of Dr Fowler and his wife, painted by George F Wright in 1845 (when the artist was only 17 years old), were hanging in the Gunn Memorial Library in Washington, Conn as of 1912.
