Note: ". . . He enlisted in Company E, 111th Ohio Volunteer Infantry and was mustered into service 9/6/1862. He was honorably discharged at Cleveland, Ohio 7/5/1865. He participated in some of the most severe and hotly contested battles of the war. "The war over he returned home and shortly afterwards located in West Jefferson, Williams Co., remaining there ten years working at his trade, that of wagon maker. From there he moved to Defiance, and was employed by the Turnbull Wagon Co. in whose employ he continued for two years never missing a days work while in their service. In 1879 he returned to the township of his birth, where he resided until his death. The deceased was a man of strong convictions, exemplary habits, true to himself, his family, and while he never affiliated with any church he was a firm believer in God and that He would bestow his gracious favor upon all those who walk uprightly. It was in the tranquillity of his home where the spirit of love and duty wisely ruled, that he found his highest peace and happiness and no one knew better than he the serene and hallowed associations that cluster around the idea of home. It was in the daily tenderness, and devotions of domestic life that the golden threads were wrought into the texture of his moral character, which gave him a calm and peaceful entrance into the beautiful home of the soul, there to enjoy in the presence of God, the companionship of dear relatives, comrades, and friends." **** 1870 US Census Samuel Shasteen Age: 37 Est Birth Year: 1832 Birthplace: Ohio Home: Jefferson, Williams, Ohio Gender: Male Roll: M593_1282 Page: 92 Margaret Shasteen; Age 38; Est Year of Birth:1831 Francis Shasteen; Age 2; Est Year of Birth:1867 **** 1880 Census - Richland Township, Defiance County [p.11] lists 46 year old Samuel Shasteen, his 47 year old wife Margaret, an adopted son Francis Minsel (12 years old) and 74 year old mother-in-law Elizabeth Shoup.
