He served in France and arrived with his battalion aboard the U.S.S. Great Northern. Irving's berth #832, space 7C, row boat #12, The trip took 8 days. His department was COE-52 Pioneer Infantry. His regiment was the Second Battalion, division - drilling, salvaging and road repair. In his diary it stated he picked up bodies along the French back roads and put them on a wagon for burial. He also dug trenches. The war ended in Nov. 1918. He received an honorable discharge on April 18, 1919. Before his discharge, Irving toured around France singing, with his beautiful tenor voice, in army shows for the troops. This was during his last few months of service. However, the army only wanted Berlin, now aged 30, to do what he knew best: to write songs of patriotism. Hence, while stationed at Camp Upton in New York, Sergeant Irving Berlin composed an all-soldier musical revue titled "Yip Yip Yaphank", written to be patriotic tribute to the United States Army. Billed as "a military mess cooked up by the boys of Camp Union," The show was produced on Broadway, The following summer, with Berlin's fellow soldiers filling the cast. It also included a number of hits, including "Mandy" and "Oh! How I Hate to Get Up in the Morning," which he performed himself. The shows earned $150,000 for a camp service center.
