Notes
a. Note:   e; 9 miles from Snaith, 10 from Selby, and 21 from, York. The population amounts to 2080. Here is a very good market on Saturday. This town is of considerable antiquity, but it contains nothing remarkable except its church, formerly collegiate, and the remains of the ancient palace of the bishops of Durham."

GEOGRAPHY: "HOLME ON SPALDING MOOR, a parish in the wapentake of Harthill; 5 miles SW. of Market Weighton, and well known by the name of Hemp Holme, from the quantity of Hemp formerly cultivated here. The hill or mount on which stands the ancient church, is a very fine object, particularly on the high road to York from Market Weighton."
GEOGRAPHY: "SKIFF, a farm house in the parish of Holme on Spalding Moor, and wapentake of Harthill; 5½ miles SSW. of Market Weighton."
GEOGRAPHY: Wapentake: A sub-division of a Riding, equivalent to the southern counties' "Hundred" and became obsolete around the year1900. The word was probably derived from an assembly or meeting place, usually at a cross-roads or near a river, where a vote was taken by a show of weapons, "weapon touch". Some of the wapentakes were further divided for simpler administration. Some wapentakes were not contiguous (i.e. they have detached parts).
