Note: Manager of basket factories in Shelby, MI and Ludington, MI. Head of service department of Autler Electric Co. in New York City, NY. The family story about his name is: When his mother was pregnant, a traveling tinker gave her $5.00 if she would name her child after him if it were a boy. The reality may be different. There was a next-door neighbor with the name of Orestes Alger who was a blacksmith. OBITUARY: Former Shelby Official Dies SHELBY - Ret O. Hamill, 82, of New Era R. R. 1. died early Tuesday morning at Hackley Hospital, Muskegon,after a short illness. Mr. Hamill was former city engineer for Shelby, he was once superintendent of Harrison Basket Co., and later owned and operated Ludington Basket Co. In 1945 he retired to a farm in rural New Era. He was born at Larysville, Pa., and married Emily Harrison, Oct. 23, 1903. He came to Shelby in 1892. He was a member of Shelby Methodist Church. Surviving are his widow; three sons, Harrison and Grant of New York and James of Muskegon; three daughters, Mrs. Robert Cooper of Wolf Lake, Mrs. Rita Hipkiss of Washington, D.C., and Mrs. Grace Larson of Muskegon; a brother, Bernie of Rock Island, Ill.; 13 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. The funeral will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Cooper Funeral Home, Shelby. Burial will be at Mount Hope Cemetery. From: The Muskegon Chronicle, 10 October 1962.
