Notes
a. Note:   Adam's birth record from the Catholic Church in Rohrbach, Pfalz, Germany, states that he was born 27 Aug 1843 rather than the date his tombstone gives: 26 Aug 1844. I believe the Catholic Church Records show the correct date.
I wrote to the Archdiocese in Speyer, Germany in 2011. I received back from them the proofs of what I had long suspected; that Adam's family were born in Rohrbach. I was sent all the baptisms, marriages, and deaths for the Christophel families. I found among them that the father of Adam, Johannes, Louise, and a before unknown daughter named Catherine was Peter Christophel, who had died in 1851 before Adam and his mother, Maria Anna, had come to America. I was also told where to write for their emigration records. I did so and received documents showing that Maria Anna, Adam, and Louise (Ludovica) had left Germany for Le Havre 14 Sep 1852; but, they could not find them in the shipping lists over there. They had no
papers for Johannes; but, armed with this much knowledge, I again searched shipping lists of the Port of New Orleans; and, this time, I found Johannes arriving aboard the Ship "Susan E. Howell" at New Orleans from Le Havre on 23 Dec 1848.
Adam became a Citizen of the United States on 01 Oct 1866, according to the Hamilton County, Ohio Probate Court Journal, Volume 30, Page 6.
Adam was a cigar maker. He listed himself in the Cincinnati City Directories under two last name spellings: Christophel and Christopher. Both listings, every year were at the same address, 189 Bremen Street; and both listings had the same occupation of cigar maker. I think he may have wanted to attract English speaking business by Anglicizing his name. All of his children began using the last name of Christopher; and, this is the name I was born with. However, I have decided to start using the original version of Christophel when using my maiden name as a part of my full name. Adam died at the age of 48 from a lung ailment which was described as either consumption or pneumonia, depending on the source. He is buried in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Cincinnati, Hamilton County, Ohio.
