Note: ***** More than three-fourths of the participants in the Waldrop DNA Project match proven descendants of this Luke Waldrop. The participants in the project that do not match this group are so different that there is no chance they are of this bloodline. All of the participants do not claim one of Luke Waldrop's sons for an ancestor. This strengthens our opinion that Luke was a descendant of Michael. We believe this was the Luke who first appeared in Hanover Co., VA in 1734 when he bought land from Henry and Mary Graves. Fourteen years later, he appeared on the Tax List in Granville Co., NC in 1748. There is a record of Luke in Granville Co., NC almost every year between 1748 and 1771. These tax lists are more like a census. Each male over 16 years old is indented under the head of the household. The Tax Lists of Granville Co., NC are at the NC Archives in Raleigh, NC. They cannot be copied, but can be photographed without a flash. These tax records name Luke's sons John, James, Joseph, Michael and Luke, Jr. between 1753 and 1767. Luke's son, Michael was called a brother in the household of John Waldrop in 1768. We used the tax lists to determine the birth years of Luke's sons, subtracting 16 from the year they first appeared on the tax list. Luke was granted over 800 acres in Granville Co., NC while he was there. He sold land to his sons John, James and Joseph. He also sold land to R. Johnson, Daniel Williams and William Sims. Some or all of these may have been sons-in-law. In 1772, these same Waldrops started showing up in what is today Laurens and Newberry Co., SC. We believe Luke Waldrop bought land in Laurens Co., SC. What we believe to be his youngest son, Jechonias Waldrop sold the land in Laurens Co., SC in 1780. Samuel Henderson was mentioned in documents of Luke Waldrop in Hanover Co., VA; Granville Co., NC and Laurens Co., SC. We believe all of these records refer to the same Luke Waldrop and the same Samuel Henderson. Luke Waldrop died shortly before or after the United States declared independence from Great Britain. We know he left a will because in 1784, Ambrose Hudgens included a chain of title in a land transaction that stated the land was granted to Hugh Young; sold to Luke Waldrop in 1772; willed to Jechonias Waldrop by Luke and sold to Hudgens by Jechonias. The will of Luke has not been found. South Carolina records were kept at Charleston, SC during that period. Laurens Co. was almost 200 miles north of Charleston. The turmoil of the Revolution probably contributed to this will being lost forever. Luke's wife's name was Christian. We are reasonably sure her maiden name was Trevillian. He was associated with Hendersons, Williams, Sims, Harrises, Johnsons and others in Granville Co., NC. His sons were associated with these same names in SC. The names of Luke, John and James Waldrop didn't appear on the Granville Co., NC tax lists after 1770. Joseph continued to appear on the list until 1775. We consider the adult life of Luke Waldrop well documented from 1734 to shortly before 1780. We believe he was about 70 years old when he died. The Children of Luke we have identified: John Waldrop, b. Abt 1733 Son Waldrop, b. Abt 1735 - died abt 1751. James Waldrop, b. Abt 1740 Joseph Waldrop, b. Abt 1745 Michael Waldrop, b. Abt 1748 Luke Waldrop, b. Abt 1750 Jechonias Waldrop, b. Abt 1754 We base these birth years on the year each son appeared on the Granville Co., NC tax list in Luke Waldrop's house. We believe they are very close to accurate. A daughter, Mary Ann Waldrop, b. Abt 1737 is claimed by most researchers of this line. This child is a total assumption. We can also make assumptions that unknown female children were born in about 1743 and 1752 based on the fact that women in those days seemed to have a baby every two years. ***** 1734 --- HANOVER CO., VA - An Indenture made 19 Sep 1734 between Henry Graves and Mary, his wife, and Luke Waldrup, planters, of Hanover County, VA to John Dixon, merchant, of Stratton Major Parish in King and Queen County, VA...96 pounds current money for 431 acres...between the lines of Major Leigh, John Saunders, Captain Crawford and John Matlock on George Pemberton's line...also that parcel containing 400 acres...joining the lines of John Saunders and Henry Graves...at Sims' corner White Oak Swamp...also that tract containing 400 acres...between the lines of Sims' Grant, Mr. Chiswell, Captain David Crawford, John Saunders and Henry Graves...which said tracts were granted to Henry Graves by three separate patents all dated 26 Jun 1731. [Copy of original document in file.-CW] ********** There have been no official records found for Luke from 1734 Hanover Co., VA to 1749 Granville Co., NC. We base our assumption that this was the same man on two facts; the "mark" used by the Luke Waldrop of Hanover, VA in 1734 and the one used by Luke Waldrop of Granville Co., NC in 1749 was very similar and there was a strong Waldrop, Williams, Henderson, Graves connection in both places. Mary, wife of Henry Graves born 1706 was the daughter of John Williams and Mary Keeling. Elizabeth Williams, wife of Samuel Henderson, who witnessed the 1734 Indenture was a sister of Mary. Daniel Williams, who married Ursula Henderson was a brother of Elizabeth and Mary. No records have been found for Luke Waldrop between 1734 Hanover Co., VA. and 1749 Granville Co., NC. ********** John, James, Joseph, Michael, Luke and Jechonias are documented sons of Luke. There are land transactions between Luke and John, James and Joseph in Granville Co., NC. A land transaction in Laurens Co., SC calls the land Jechonias sold "the land willed to him by his father, Luke Waldrop". Family tradition says Mary Ann was Luke's daughter and married Samuel Henderson. These may not be all of Luke's children. There is no documentation that Luke was related to Michael Waldrop either, but we beleive there was a kinship. ********** Jan Dawson 30 Jun 2006 - I do not have any direct evidence the Williams and Waldrops were related, but I suspect there was a tie. They all lived in VA and later in Laurens Co., SC. Besides witnessing Daniel William (Sr's?) will, Luke deeded land to Daniel Williams (Jr?) at the same time he deeded land to his own sons. I've often wondered if Luke had more daughters, and Daniel Williams, as well as Richard Johnson (1765 --- Deed Book "G" p. 71. 6 Feb 1765) were not sons-in-law; However, I have no evidence they were. John Drayton Williams was a descendant of the Bollings. John Waldrop, the Rev. War soldier from Greenville, SC, married a SARAH, whom we believe was a Bolling. These Bollings were later found with the Waldrops in Laurens Co., SC along with the Hendersons and Keelings. John Drayton Williams was the grandson of Daniel Williams (Sr?) whose will Luke Waldrop witnessed. "Abstracts of Granville Co., NC. I am seeing people put data out that he was born in 1680. [The date was 1682, not 1680. There is no record of any apprenticeship for Michael. He was an indentured servant, but that is all we know.--jd] Michael's son, Luke Waldrop, Sr. was bc 1712 is presumed to have been born in Hanover Co VA , not in Amelia Co VA. Is this the 1749 grant?--jd] Luke Waldrop m. Christian Trevillian abt 1731 in VA - they removed to Granville CO NC in mid 1700s, then on to Laurens Co., SC where they are both buried.
