  Family letters written to my grandmother Lou Patton say that Daniel and Richard Lewis came from Wales and settled in North Carolina about 1772. The home place was near Mabel in Watauga, County. Don't know if this was this Richard was Daniel's father or his brother who was also named Richard. When John S. Lewis was sixteen years old he left home and went to Indiana where he later married S. Catherine Parks. They came to Texas in 1874 and claimed a land grant south of DeSoto at the southeast corner of the intersection of Parkerville Road and Hampton Road. John Lewis was said to have run away to Mexico at the beginning of the Civil War to escape the draft. Who knows why? This man from Indiana might have been sympathetic to the Union. He could not have been gone very long--notice the close ages of his children. (Linda Lewis)
