  During the Civil War James enlisted in the Arkansas Volunteers and became a Captain of an Infantry Company. For the rest of his life, he was known as "Captain Jimmy".
  9 Mar 1863: "Capt Vanderpool came in yesterday from Newton Co. with 200 Union men, mostly recruits for the volunteer service." Col. Larue Harrison.

 Book M-1, Page 243 Newton County Will Book: The last will and testament of James R Vanderpool of the town of Jasper in the County of Newton and State of Arkansas. To whom it may concern. Know ye that I, James R Vanderpool, being of sound mind and knowing the uncertainty of life and the certainty of death make this my last will and testament, I give devise and bequeath my estate and property real and personal as follows, that is to say to my son, William C Vanderpool, two hundred dollars to have and to hold as his own as a legacy at my decease and to my daughter, Sarah E Treat, two hundred dollars to have and to hold in her own as a legacy at my decease and to my son, James M Vanderpool, two hundred dollars to have and to hold as his own as a legacy at my decease and to my wife, Anna L Vanderpool, all the remainder of my estate both real and personal after the (3) three above named heirs bequested portioned? is taken out that is to say two hundred dollars each and after my first debts is all satisfied and my funeral expense is paid to have and to hold as her own at my decease during her natural life or her widowhood and at her death if she remain my widow until the termination of her natural life then my remaining heirs that survive my widow shall each be given two hundred dollars of my estate that is to the heirs not mentioned above to wit Francis M Vanderpool, Thadius S Vanderpool, Malinda E Vanderpool, Thomas A Vanderpool, Daniel D Vanderpool and Mary L Vanderpool and after the last mentioned heirs receives their (200) two hundred dollars cash (each?) the remainder of my estate shall be divided equally among my heirs collectively but on the contrary if my wife, Anna L Vanderpool, shall remarry during her natural life at her remarriage my whole estate then remaining shall be disposed of to the best interest of my said heirs then living and divided as above requires?. In the case Anna L Vanderpool should remain my widow during her natural life with this exception at Anna L Vanderpool's remarriage she shall receive a full heirs part of my estate when the division is struck. I appoint James M Vanderpool and Anna L Vanderpool my executors of this last will and testament hereby revoking all former wills by me made. In witness whereof, I have hereunto subscribed my name this 11th day of February in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and seventy-nine (1879). s/James R Vanderpool.
  The foregoing instrument was at the date thereof subscribed by the said James R Vanderpool in our presence and he at the same time declare the same to be his last will and testament and requested us to sign our names as witnesses which we do in his presence. s/F O Boomer s/John D Nixon.
