Notes
a. Note:   NI13 My Mother - Also A Veteran
While it is indeed fitting that we take every opportunity to pay tribute to our country's veterans, I would like to pay honor to my mother.
She watched and waited while six of her seven children left home to serve in three wars. Four sons were with the Army and Navy against the Japanese. Three would later serve in Korea, one of which had also served in World War II. And later I was to serve in Viet Nam, in addition to combat duty in Korea.
I know that my mother cried a lot and she prayed even more; however, I cannot recall ever hearing her complain or openly show fear.
My father was a soldier during World War I and missed being sent into combat by less than a month, as the fighting came to an end. He was openly and fiercely proud of his sons' military service, yet my mother was always outwardly calm and accepting of her situation.
I firmly believe that her prayers for our safety were a major factor in my brothers' and my safe return home from combat. She never wavered in her faith, and so I feel she was the true hero, who gave much to her country.
