James was born in North Carolina. He moved to Georgia around 1820. Here he met and in December, 1823 married Mary Ann Rebecca Mear, who was born June 2, 1807 (other relatives disagree with the information in this book and indicated her last name was McArthur and parents were John and Nancy McArthur). He was a blacksmith by trade. His property was valued at $600 in the 1850 Census. Around 1848, he moved to Wetumpka and later to Northwest Alabama. He died in 1882, and is buried in the Wakefield-Ingle Cemetery on the old Russellville Road, between Nauvoo and Lynn. The Brannan family was an important one in the history of Walker and Winston counties. , Page 188, "The Wakefield Family of Walker County".
