Notes
a. Note:   Freda Irene Cline Walker
 June 30, 1919 - December 09, 2015
With heavy hearts we announce the peaceful passing of Freda Irene (Cline) Walker, our beloved wife, mother and matriarch at the age of 96 on December 9, 2015.
Freda Irene Walker was born to John D. and Gladys M. (Baker) Cline Turner on June 30, 1919 in Cleveland, Oklahoma. She is survived by her husband, Lt. Col. Ludwell K. Walker, U.S. Air Force, Retired; sons, Edward Reed Walker II, Kent Walker & wife, Brenda, and Bradford Ray Walker & wife, Frances, all of Canyon Lake, Texas; sisters, Mildred Fliehman and Jean Price, both of Woodsfield, Ohio; grandchildren, Patrick Walker, Gentry Walker, Whitney Walker, Weston Walker and Easton Walker; and great-grandchildren, Tyler and Camryn.
Freda and her sisters grew up in the beautiful hills of southeastern Ohio. By the time she was a teenager, however, the oil business had called her dad and the family back to Oklahoma where she went on to graduate with honors from Central State University at Edmund, paying her way by carhopping and tutoring chemistry to pre-med students. She became a licensed medical technologist, and that planted in her a burning interest in medicine and healthcare which would remain with her throughout her life, giving her the opportunity to work in several doctor and dentist offices while, at the same time, applying that same caring and expertise to raising three rambunctious sons.
Traveling over much of the world with her military husband, Freda studied oil painting under a renowned German art instructor in Kaiserslautern, Germany, and accomplished a number of beautiful oil paintings. Once back home, she turned her attention to another passion, education, and became certified to teach High School English in four states Texas, Oklahoma, Ohio, and Hawaii. Then, in the 1960`s, she decided to pursue her Master`s degree at Texas A & M University, having the added distinction of being one of the first female students ever to attend that institution.
But Freda`s first love, above all else, was her family. And she did it the old fashioned way. She was an accomplished seamstress, a marvelous cook and a homemaker through and through. In between playing Den Mother and homework coach, and keeping the kitchen stocked with Christmas cookies, she still somehow found time to do her paintings, keep her garden, play the Hammond organ, run for school board, work the local elections, and manage the guest cottages on the family ranch, all while keeping up with the news and politics. And she wouldn`t miss working the crossword puzzle in the morning paper for the world.
She tangled with a rattlesnake in the 1980`s, but bounced back with flying colors (black and blue, mainly, on that swollen foot). And when she and her husband lost nearly everything in a catastrophic 2010 house fire, she did not let a week`s hospitalization for smoke inhalation knock her off her pace. Her first week back home, she grabbed her clipboard and a tablet, lined up a builder, and would have the house completely rebuilt from scratch in an astonishing six months.
She was simply an astonishing individual who will forever remain her family`s source of inspiration.
The family would like to sincerely thank the staff of the San Marcos and New Braunfels hospitals for their love, care and tireless devotion to our Grammy in the final days of her struggle.
Graveside Services and Interment will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, December 14, 2015 at Mountain Valley Cemetery in Sattler, Texas with Reverend Rick Bartlett officiating. You are invited to sign the guestbook at www.doeppenschmidtfuneralhome.com
Flowers may be directed to the funeral home at 189 N. Seguin Ave. in New Braunfels prior to 9am on Monday December 14, 2015.
